The bashed in wood box, leather cord and the cross are organic, the figure and nails not; God made them all and they were used against him. The box with nails is not a symbol we recognize as representing a particular idea, so I’ve used it to represent a tortured thing. Christ choose to fulfill His duty, will I take the place of that box thing and tie myself to Christ; let him carry away my battered self?
